Professor Thomas M. Newman was a founding faculty member of the Portland State University Anthropology Department from 1959 to 1982. An Archaeologist, Professor Newman was a dedicated scholar and teacher who believed strongly in his students and in the value of Anthropology. The award is established in his memory. Awards will be made to assist students with one-time expenses not covered by financial aid or graduate assistantships, such as assistance with thesis research (e.g. a radiocarbon date, informant's fees, travel to a research locality, specialized equipment), travel for a conference to present a paper or poster, and the like. One to two awards between $500.00 and $750.00 per award are anticipated annually.
