ISLE Students study a variety of subjects while in Sri Lanka. The first session of the program includes instruction in Sinhala language and in the Material Culture (archaeological history) of the island. During the second session, students continue their Sinhala instruction, and choose two of the following courses: Ethnicity, Colonial History, Politics, Buddhist Doctrine, Literature, and Environmental Studies. During the third session, while continuing with Sinhala, students take two classes from the following: Gender, Ritual, Development, Buddhist Ethics, and Art & Society. Optional classes in Batik-making and Kandian Dance & Drumming are available during sessions two and three. During the fourth session, students engage in Independent Study Projects of their own devising. Sinhala language forms a main portion of the curriculum. Here are some pictures of Sinhala classes:
