The ISLE program is a study abroad program based in Kandy, Sri Lanka. "ISLE" Stands for "Intercollegiate Sri Lanka Education." Since 1982, over 300 students from the United States have studied in Sri Lanka through this program. Students come from eight different colleges: Bates, Bowdoin, Carleton, Colby, Grinnell, Holy Cross, Swarthmore, and Whitman. The ISLE Center is the hub of program activity. It houses the resident director, her two assistants, and some of the program staff. It also provides classroom and library facilities for students. Students live with home-stay families and attend a wide range of classes taught by professors from the University of Peradeniya, one of Sri Lanka's premier academic institutions. They study Sinhala, one of the local languages. As the capstone experience of their study abroad, they engage in a month-long independent study project of their own devising. This website presents pictures and text pertaining to the ongoing 2003 ISLE program. We hope that the friends and families of this year's program participants will enjoy it!
